8th grade Math

We will be exploring the topics and skills that will prepare the students for Algebra (9th grade) which include solving multiple step equations, solving a system of equations, working with exponents, and interpreting linear equations with slope, y-intercept, x-intercept and bi-variate data.

Explanation of Marks

Achievement marks will be determined by percentage of points earned out of the total amount of points possible.  Assessments (test, quizzes, projects) are 75% of the final grade, Homework/Classwork is 20% and Class Participation is 5%.

A: 100%-90%, B: 89%-80%, C: 79%-70%, D: 69%-60%, F: 59% and less.

Work Habits marks: Students with 6 or more unexcused missing assignments will receive a U (Unsatisfactory).  Students that frequently forget supplies (pencil, notebook, textbook) will receive a U.  Students that are tardy to class more than 5 times will receive a U.

Cooperation marks: Students that are disruptive in class will be warned and corrected.  If it continues to occur, parents will be notified and/or the student will receive an Unsatisfactory mark on the progress report.  Students will be able to demonstrate improvement for the next report card.  A student will receive a U on the final report card only after a parent has been notified by phone call, email, Schoology message or progress report.

Course Materials

Required Materials

These materials should be brought to class each and every day.

  • Charged iPad
  • At least 2 pencils, sharpened or mechanical pencils with the necessary lead.
  • Composition book or spiral notebook, single subject.
  • Math 8 textbook.

Expectations

Students are expected to follow my instructions during class.  Students will have opportunities to have discussions with each other and will need to listen for my signal to quiet down so that we may have a class discussion.  Students will be reminded of expectations throughout the school year and given opportunities for correction.

Homework is assigned 3-4 times a week.  It is expected that students will try their best to complete the assignments and bring questions the next day.  The following day, in class, we will review the assignment and go over the answers.  The necessary work for problems should be shown on the assignments.  The correct answer alone will not be enough to receive full credit.  Students are expected to turn in complete work.  If they were absent or need more time because they needed clarification then they can turn in the assignment anytime before the next grading period.
