Independent Reading Project

On a daily basis, students will read independently for 30 minutes at school and at home. The California Department of Education’s Language Arts framework requires students to read one million words independently, annually during middle school in order to facilitate vocabulary development. One million words is approximately 20, 200-page novels the students will read in 40 weeks of school; the students are expected to read a new 200-page novel every two weeks. Students will visit the school library every two weeks and are highly encouraged to visit the Los Angeles Public Library to make their book selections. Additionally, students will have a book report due once a month, which will account for a project grade.
