When

On Wednesday April 24th, the district, the state of California and our nation will be observing The Armenian Genocide. This event was the Ottoman Government's systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians from the Western part of Armenia, which was illegally annexed and made part of the country of Turkey. The atrocities began on April 24, 1915, and were carried out during and after World War I. It was implemented in two phases: the mass killing of the male population, and the mass deportation of women, children, and the elderly, on death marches into the Syrian Desert.

Even with historical evidence and newspaper articles (these are just a few) to prove the event, Turkey continues to deny the genocide. Thankfully, many countries around the world, including the US, have recognized that the Armenian Genocide is an event to be remembered on April 24, The Armenian Genocide Day of Remembrance. It is very important to note that on this day we also strive to remember the mass killings of specific groups that have taken place throughout time in human history- there are too many to name, but we must continue to learn and remember so that it FINALLY NEVER happens again!
