OUR PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE FOR MARCH 2008

Dear King Parents,

With the arrival of the Spring Semester comes STAR testing time. These assessments of student learning are very important.  Not only are they used to help determine the appropriate placement of students in classes (e.g. gifted, advanced studies), but they are also a determining factor in the reclassification of English Learners. For these reasons, and so that we may have a true picture of how well we are educating our students, we ask all our students to do their best and show what they have learned as they take the various assessments.

Our 7th grade B & C Track students took the CA Writing Assessment on February 26 and 27. 7th grade A Track students are scheduled to take this assessment on April 29 & 30.  CA Writing Assessment scores are combined with the Language Arts scores to determine the overall performance scores on the California Standards Test English Language Arts section.

California Standards Test (CST) is composed of a series of assessments on academic content standards in specific areas such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  Our standards-based instructional program is designed to prepare our students to demonstrate mastery of these content standards.

C Track students will test March 24, 2008 – April 7, 2008.
A & B Track students will test May 27, 2008 – June 9, 2008.

In order to help students prepare for the tests, released test items are now available form the prior years’ CST administrations at www.cde.ca.gov.

The California Fitnessgram measures students’ performance in each of the following six components: aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, trunk strength, endurance and flexibility.  There is no parent opt-out for this test.  All 7th grade students must complete as much of the test as they are physically able. B-track 7th grade students completed their battery of tests in February. A & C track 7th grade students will complete the battery of tests by April 25.  Results of this exam are forwarded to the State of California for a statewide comparison.  Presently, high school students are required to take two years of Physical Education.  Students who do not do well on this exam may be required to take up to 4 years of Physical Education.

Please help us emphasize the importance of doing well on the state assessments by ensuring that your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a good breakfast, and puts forth his or her best effort on all of the tests.  Thank you for your help.
