PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE October 2007

Dear King Parents,

Each year our students take the California Standards Test (CST). Our targets for the 2006-2007 school year were 24.4% proficient in English Language Arts and 26.5% proficient in Math. Below is a summary of our school’s results:

School-wide Targets for Adequate Yearly Progress
ELA Target
  • 2006:    24.4%
  • 2007:    28.7%
  • Change:  – 0.3
Math Target
  • 2006:  26.5%
  • 2007:  24.1%
  • Change:  – 2.5
We are taking these results very seriously, and are implementing school-wide instructional strategies to assist all students in achieving proficiency, with a special focus on English Learners.

For students who are on track, A-track has completed 4 weeks of classes and C-Track has completed 12 weeks. Parents will receive progress reports through the mail shortly. If your child earns A’s, B’s, C’s, (no D’s or Fails) as marks, and E’s and S’s in work habits and cooperation, he or she is progressing satisfactorily. If however, your child earns a D or a Fail, or has U’s in work habits or cooperation, please call the Guidance Office at (323) 644-6749 to make an appointment with a counselor. We appreciate and value your involvement as parents for the benefit of your child’s education.

Along with making academic progress, it is of the utmost importance that your child attend school on a daily basis. Every day counts! Students should be in their homeroom classes before the tardy bell rings at 7:31 a.m.

As part of our effort to help students remain academically focused, all students receive free Academic Planners, in which they are asked to record all assignments and due dates. Please support our efforts by monitoring your child’s use of the planner on a daily basis.

Another way in which parents can support their children in reaching proficiency is to enroll them in Saturday School and Intersessionclasses. In addition, LAUSD will hold an informational session regarding free tutoring services on Saturday October 13th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Virgil Middle School. Please call Ms. Malone or Mr. Martinez at 323-644-6700 for more information.

Finally, we are always looking for parent volunteers to assist us at school. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Ms. Alvarado at 323-644-6743.
