EXTENDED LEARNING ACADEMY

My name is Musetta Malone. I am the, Extended Learning Academy assistant principal. I am in charge of our intervention programs here at Thomas Starr King. I work with the Extended Learning Academy counselor, Ms. Nicenia Espinoza, to assist children at King who are in need of intervention. Our office is located directly across from the main office. Ms. Malone’s phone extension is 119 and Ms. Espinoza’s extension is 168.

Intersession is one of our school’s intervention programs. During a student’s off-track time, the district mandates that remedial classes in Math and Language Arts is offered for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are in need of academic intervention. Students who attend Intersession receive 4 weeks of Math and Language Arts intervention.

The Extended Learning Academy or Saturday School, is our intervention program that occurs all year long for on or off track students. This year we will have 4 eight-week sessions. Students will attend classes from 8:00 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. Students will receive assistance in Mathematics, English or English as a second Language. We will also have ESL classes for our parents on Saturday with from 8:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Students at King may also participate in the LACER program. The LACER program is an after school program. LACER meets every day after school from 3:19 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 1:37p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Students are able to participate in a variety of activities such as art club, drill team, basketball, hip hop dance and math lab to name a few. Students are required to complete an application and return it to the LACER Office located at the top of the girl’s gym.
We look forward to working with you this year.
