MAGNET NEWS AND THE COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Magnet News

The CHOICES brochures have been mailed to all families who have previously applied to a magnet program, and they are also available in the main office and magnet office at T.S. King Middle School.  Remember that all magnet applications are due by Friday, December 17th at 5:00 pm.  Any magnet student wishing to continue in a magnet program for high school must submit an application and indicate a program of choice.

For the 2010-11 academic year, T.S. King will open an Environmental Studies Magnet.  We will have 120 spots for 7th grade students.  This means that current T.S. King 6th grade students qualify for admission to this magnet for 7th grade.  All applications must be mailed by the December 17th deadline.  You may also drop off the application before December 17th to the main office at King, and we will deliver it to the central office for you.  The new magnet’s code is #1820801 - this code, along with the new magnet’s name, must be entered on the CHOICES magnet application.  Please contact the magnet office at (323) 644-6755, if you have any questions about applying to the T.S. King Environmental Studies Magnet.

The quarterly Poetry Slam took place on Friday, 11/19.  The winners of the poetry slam were Sage McBride Scanlon Perez (first place), Bayjolie Wolf (second place), and Greta Grisez (third place).  We are proud of and congratulate all of our King student poet participants.

We encourage students to participate in the T.S. King Writers’ Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch in room 209.  The club’s first public reading of the year took place at Stories Bookstore in Echo Park.  The following T.S. King writers took part in this event: Spencer Michel, Bayjolie Wolf, Sage McBride Scanlon Perez, Jasper Ferehawk, and Maya Abee.  The Writers’ Club will host open monthly poetry reading in room 136 - all students are welcome.

The next Friends of King Magnet meeting and monthly magnet parent meeting will both take place on Tuesday, January 11th.  FOKM will meet at 5:00 pm in the magnet office, and the monthly parent meeting will take place at 6:00 pm in the school library.  We would like to thank Ms. Cole, our magnet P.E. teacher, for joining us at our December meeting to share information about our physical education program.

Happy winter season and new year to all.
