OUR PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE FOR OCTOBER 2010

Dear King Parents,

October is College Awareness Month! As part of raising college awareness at the middle school level we are holding various college contests during the month of October. Students may choose to design a book mark or college pennant or make a short 2-minute or less film answering the contest prompt: “College Starts at King!” Explain what this mean to you. Why would the school choose this as a slogan? Prizes will include a catered lunch for first place winners and college t-shirts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Teachers are making announcements about their favorite college experiences and are decorating their doors to encourage our students to think about which college they would like to attend. Please continue to encourage your child to wear a college t-shirt every Monday instead of his or her uniform shirt.

As part of our effort to increase academic achievement, we continue to implement Personalized Learning Environments (PLE’s). Each team has held a welcome assembly for their students, informing them of team goals and expectations for the 2010-2011 school year. Ask your child to tell you which team he/she belongs to. Is it the A-Team, Green Team, Lion’s Pride, or Magnet Team?

Your active involvement in the education of your children is crucial to the continuous increase in the academic achievement of all our students. We ask that you continue to send your children to school on a regular basis. Although students can sometimes make up work when they are absent, they do not benefit from the actual lesson’s presentation and student to-teacher conversations that take place in class. As an incentive for perfect attendance for an entire semester, students win King T-shirts to wear in place of their white uniform shirts. So far 875 King students have perfect attendance for the 2010-2011 school year.

We invite parents to participate in our Parent Advisory Committee elections which will be held Tuesday, October 12, in room 136. Come be part of the decision making process at our school. As you know, progress report cards are mailed home every 5 weeks. Look for your child’s first progress report in the mail at the end of October. If you have any question or concerns regarding your child’s academic progress please do not hesitate to call the Guidance Office at (323) 644-6715.
