MAGNET NEWS AND THE COUNSELOR'S CORNER

MAGNET NEWS

Congratulations to the students, parents and faculty of the Thomas Starr King Middle School Magnet! We have been recognized as a “Model of Excellence Magnet” for the second year in a row. Based on our 2010 California Standards Test results, 90% of our students scored proficient or advanced in English and 81% scored proficient or advanced in Math. We look forward to another year of continued academic success for our magnet scholars.

We want to thank everyone that took part in our annual magnet potluck this year - it was a successful event once again. Thank you to all the families who provided the delicious food. The potluck was a tangible celebration of our cultural diversity, as well as a great way to start the new school year.

Our monthly magnet parent meetings will take place every second Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the school library. These meetings are a great way to learn about how you can become involved in your child’s education. Meetings include school-wide and magnet program updates, presentations by teachers and students, updates from Friends of King Magnet, our parent fundraising organization, an open forum to voice your questions and concerns, and announcements about upcoming events. In addition, Friends of King Magnet meets on the same day as our monthly parent meetings at 5:00 pm to plan all of our fundraising efforts throughout the year.

We will start visiting LAUSD elementary schools in our community to let prospective families know about the educational program we offer at King and recruit students for the 2011-12 academic year. If you are interested in having your child volunteer during one of our elementary school presentations, please let us know. Having our King students, as alumni of their elementary schools, present alongside staff members is a powerful addition to our recruitment meetings. Call the magnet office at (323) 644-6755 if you would like to volunteer in these efforts.

Happy fall. Please do not hesitate to call the magnet office with any or your questions or concerns.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

The school year is well underway. The first progress reports will be mailed home at the end of October. Just a reminder, encourage your child to take advantage of the after school LACER program that provides homework help in the library every Monday-Friday until 6:00 p.m.

In order to participate in the 8th grade Culmination Ceremony and receive a Certificate of Completion from middle school, current 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are required to pass all their classes in 6th, 7th and 8th grade with a “D” or higher. However, because these students have not had access to summer school/intervention classes, students earning a “Fail” in the final report card of the first semester, will be given an opportunity to counterbalance that “Fail” by earning a “C” or better in the same course during second semester. In order to offset any course grades of “Fail” in grades 6 and/or 7 during the second semester, students must pass all their coursework in 8th grade with a “D” or higher. Students may earn no more than 2 U’s in cooperation and no more than 2 U’s in work habits for the 8th grade year from two different teachers. Anyone who wishes to appeal the process may so through the Culmination Appeals Committee in the Spring.
