Armenians all around the world today will observe The 101st year commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, which was the Turkish government's systematic killing of its minority Armenian citizens from their own homeland. It took place during and after World War 1 starting on April 24, 1915, and was implemented in 3 phases: the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and forced labor, and the deportation of women, children, the elderly and sick on death marches to the Syrian Desert. It also involved the illegal takeover of Armenian lands west of present day Armenia. The total number of people killed as a result has been estimated at 1.5 - 2 million over a 7-year period.
Today, Armenians all over the world will be observing these atrocities and march in solidarity to keep the memory alive of the first genocide of the 20th century, 101 years ago today.
Currently, Argentina, Austria, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Russia and the Vatican along with a few more nations have recognized what happened to the Armenians as 'Genocide'. This is an important distinction because once full recognition is granted, closure for those who died and closure for the descendants of those who escaped can finally be achieved and Turkey can begin reparations for the atrocities it committed so willingly.
