Welcome!

Welcome to Thomas Starr King Middle School!  It seems like the summer flew by, but I'm glad to see you all here.  There are so many fun and exciting things about sixth grade, I cannot wait to get started.  You will have a tremendous year here in FAM, and you'll make some friends and memories that will stay with you for a long time.  You will also be learning and accepting challenges from all your teachers this year.  I am writing to introduce myself so that you can get to know me better.

I have been teaching for 25 years and this will be my fifth year teaching 6th grade at King.  I have taught every grade level from first to sixth and to tell you the truth, sixth grade is the best!  I am also very glad to be teaching history, which is my favorite subject, as I love learning about the past as well as being aware of what is going on in the present.

I am a native Angeleno. My mom was from Cuba and my dad was from Puerto Rico.  I have family that live on both islands and yes, I do speak Spanish!  I went to Notre Dame Academy Girls High School and while studying at Cal State Northridge, I took an Anthropology class and fell in love, so I majored in Cultural Anthropology. I am a dog person, so I don't know how I ended up with two naughty and lovable cats: Luna and Blue!

Some of my favorite things to do are travel, read, dance, and eat (chocolate).  I travel whenever I get the chance  because I believe that by being exposed to new places, people and culture, you'll develop a wider world view. Another reason why I love to travel: it helps open your mind. You realize that there's no one way to live life. As for dancing, it just makes my heart smile and my worries disappear!

There are two more things that I love: music (80s music in particular) and sci-fi movies.

Well, I look forward to teaching you this year, and I can't wait to get to learn about you! We are going to have a great year together!

Your Teacher,
Ms. Aviles
